Minimum Requirements for Participation
To be successful in the Emergency Vehicle Driver Training course and to satisfy logistical needs and program expectations, the following minimum requirements have been established:
- Students must be 18 years of age at the time of registration and a documented member of a bona fide Emergency Services Organization (ESO) (required for Worker’s Compensation Insurance coverage).
- Students must have a valid driver’s license in their possession during the class.
- Students must complete and submit a Training Authorization Form. Attendance and participation must be authorized by the Chief or Training Officer of the student’s ESO.
- Note: Students not affiliated with an ESO must provide documentation of adequate health/medical and liability insurance. Acceptance is subject to the discretion of the instructor and the Field Supervisor of the Educational Training Agency (ETA).
- Students must attend all required sessions of the course to receive a Certificate of Completion.
- Students should have a basic knowledge of their ESO’s policies, procedures, and guidelines for operating emergency vehicles.
- The student’s ESO must provide an emergency vehicle for use during the practical, hands-on portion of the course.
Course Equipment
Students will receive documentation of course completion on the apparatus they train with; however, final authorization to operate apparatus remains the responsibility of their department. Each student must provide the apparatus they intend to train on (e.g., to drive an engine, the student must bring an engine or larger apparatus).
Course Description
This course is designed for both novice and experienced emergency vehicle operators. It provides instruction for emergency personnel involved in operating emergency vehicles. Topics include defensive driving, emergency response, vehicle maintenance, and a driver training obstacle course. Students are responsible for securing the apparatus they will drive during the course.
